NEW KR3W ADS

Been getting a handful of emails about the new KR3W ads so figured this would be a great excuse to keep some of yall blog beasts happy.

I could go into how insane it is somehow coordinate the likes of Muska, TK, Antwuan, Ellington, Greco, Furby, Greg Meyers, Dan Murphy, and Lizard into one location at the same time, but we’ll leave that to imagination!

Instead, I’ll just talk about the shoot details peeps were curious about. Basically, this is about as far from hitting the streets and shooting a skate photo as you can get dudes. We rented a photo Studio in Culver City for the day that came complete with kitchen, lounge, internet, and audio equipment to keep everyone fed and entertained (A.K.A. in the building).

KR3W’s MULTI HYPER-talented Art Director Ben Shipp and I had talked about using colored gels for a while, so we dropped about $150 on a stack of the whole spectrum. From there we cut and taped them on the lights, shot from the side to get color highlights and played around to see what colors looked good.

We also used some 4′x8′ boards to block lens flare light then added a soft box from the top to add just a little fill light, but not so much it washed the colors away.

From there Ben totally killed it in post, even using his photoshop skills to match the background colors to the colors in the photo. I think it turned out pretty sick.

Anyway, I’m not sure if everyone is hyped on photo nerd breakdowns like this, so not getting too tech with photos of the setup. But hopefully this answers some questions, or probably leads to many more, fire up the comments and let me know, ha.

Shot With:Canon 1DS Mark II, Canon 24-70 lens.

For what its worth, I like hearing about the breakdown. I shoot skating as well as commercial work and have always felt, with occasional exceptions, that skate photographers either don’t put enough effort to or just can’t shoot a solid commercial-style portrait.
I would like to think that as time goes on and the number of kids who buy DSLRs and Viv285s shooting solid skate photos increases, the pros who stay at the top of the game will be able to shoot the skate photos and the ad campaigns as well-rounded photographers.

Naw, man breakdowns are great. For portraiture, studio, skating or whatever… It’s always really useful and interesting.

    At least for some people.
